About

Hi, I’m Manuel and I like distributed systems.

I’m currently researching for Nokia Bell Labs on cool platforms and how to make them more autonomous and intelligent when serving applications.

I have the best wife of all™ and two wonderful sons.

Projects

Serverless Workflows (2019-ongoing)

https://www.github.com/cncf/wg-serverless-workflow

Create a commonly understood Serverless workflow model language

The CNCF working group is seeking standardization of how serverless applications are modeled that are loosely coupled event-based, demand-scaled to zero, and interact on a global scale.

Cloud network virtualization (2011-2015)

SDN for distributed clouds, OpenStack, IETF ALTO, Netconf/Yang, Nuage, TOSCA

Several years of SDN research including controllers, WAN virtualization, intent-based networking, application-layer transport optimization and lots of making OpenStack more network-aware.

Enable 'real-time' interaction between people and applications over a Service Oriented Infrastructure

We’ve developed the Intelligent Service-Oriented Network Infrastructure for this project to orchestrate machine and network virtualization, which is what you’d call a Cloud infrastructure today. It features distributed transactions to deploy and maintain application declarations (cmp. Kubernetes declarative resources) and supports performance SLA for real-time workloads.

Building a distributed IMS with border nodes

We unified session border controller and border gateways on common off-the-shelf hardware to run a distributed IMS on a scalable set of IP multimedia exchanges up to deploying OSA applications at the domain edge of the provider network.

Researcher

2005 - ongoing

I worked on the IP Multimedia Subsystem, fixed mobile access network convergence, Cloud infrastructure, network virtualization, Cloud networking, Software-defined networking, Big data analytics, Container orchestration and I’m currently working on the Serverless paradigm.

Education

MSc Distributed Computing Systems Engineering

Brunel University

2016 - 2018

Taking an MSc after 10 years of work experience while building a house and awaiting my second son was a wonderful experience, not only because it was such a busy time, but because I got taught by Prof. Kyberd, Prof. Khan, Prof. Li and other great personalities. And I got to wear a gown and mortarboard, which is an extraordinary experience for a German.

BSc Information Technology

Berufsakademie Baden-Württemberg

2002 - 2005

This cooperative programme and my supervisors at Alcatel SEL AG gave me a great start into applied research and international collaborations.
